DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

As for the future, we desire to bless your name that you have covered it from our eyes; nor would we wish to lift even a corner of the veil which hides from us the things that will be in the future; but we delight to feel that he who has ruled all things for our good does not change. It may be that you have appointed for us great torrents of tribulation, but you will be with us if we pass through the river. Perhaps you will permit us to go through blazing fires of persecution or temptation, but we shall not be burned, for you have assured us it shall be so, that we shall go through the fires unhurt, since you will be with us.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“So the LORD relented concerning the disaster he had said he would bring on his people.” (Exodus 32:14)

I do not need to say this verse speaks according to the human perspective. To speak of God from God’s perspective is reserved for God himself and mortals could not comprehend such speech. The Lord often speaks, not according to literal fact, but according to the appearance of things to us, in order that we may understand so far as the human can comprehend the divine.

The Lord’s purposes never really change. His eternal will must be the same forever, for he cannot alter, since he would either have to alter for the better or for the worse. He cannot change for the better, for he is infinitely good. It is blasphemous to suppose that he could change for the worse

He who sees all things at once and perceives at one glance the beginning and the end of all things has no need to repent. “God is not a man, that he might lie, or a son of man, that he might change his mind” (Numbers 23:19), but in the course of his action there sometimes appears to us to be a great change. We say of the sun that it rises and sets, though it does not actually do so, and we do not deceive when we speak after that fashion. So we say concerning God, in the language of the text, that he “changed his mind.” It appears to us to be so, and it is so in the act of God, yet this statement casts no doubt on the great and glorious doctrine of the immutability of God.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Luobohe Miao of China.

Family and clans are important to the Luobohe Miao culture. Jesus came to bless “all the families of the earth” (Genesis 12:3).

Pray that every Luobohe Miao would hear the gospel in this generation.
