DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
We wish that the zeal for your house would eat us up; that we would be full of sacred warmth; that our lips were touched with the burning coal so that there would be a fire in us perpetually flaming and burning, making us a living sacrifice to God.
Bless us, we pray, as to our example and influence. May it always be a blessing to others; may there be sweetness and light about us which all can’t help but perceive. We do not crave this for our honor, but that our light might shine before others “so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Lord, grant us this!
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:16)
This state of lukewarmness is so congenial with human nature that it is hard to fetch men from it. Cold makes us shiver, and great heat causes us pain, but a tepid bath is comfort itself. Such a temperature suits human nature. The world is always at peace with a lukewarm church, and such a church is always pleased with itself.
Compromise is the order of the day. Thousands try to hold with the hare and run with the hounds; they are for God and money, truth and error, and so are “neither hot nor cold.” Do I speak somewhat strongly? Not so strongly as my Master, for he says, “I am going to vomit you out of my mouth.” He is nauseated with such conduct, it sickens him, and he will not endure it.
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, we’re praying for the Naruo of China.
The Naruo live in southwestern China, where roads and infrastructure are being built at a rapid pace. God could use these new roads as an open door for the gospel.
Pray that the increased accessibility of the Naruo’s region would result in the gospel reaching them.
RECOMMENDED RESOURCE
Warning: This book will inspire you to take bold risks for Christ*
Extreme Devotion from The Voice of The Martyrs is an epic book collecting 365 super-short stories of persecution and Christian sacrifice around the world. (They’ll mail you a FREE copy this month!!)
These daily 3-minute readings will strengthen your faith and your love for Jesus.
In one sense, this book is really EASY to read. The stories are short and accessible (even if you’re not a big reader or very informed about persecution of Christians in other cultures). There are reflection points at the end of each daily reading to help you unpack what you read.
In another sense, this book is really DANGEROUS to read. These are not stories that you can read and walk away from. These are testimonies that will show you how costly following Jesus can be. And when you see the bold faithfulness of our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world, you’ll know more than ever that Christ is worthy.
(While I called it “dangerous,” this mindset is actually the safest way to live.)
This month, The Voice of the Martyrs is giving away FREE physical copies of Extreme Devotion to Pray with Spurgeon readers (USA only). Request your copy today.
FAITH’S CHECKBOOK
Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.
If you want to strengthen your faith in God’s promises (and support this ministry!), subscribe to Pray with Spurgeon Plus here.
“The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, ‘Have courage! For as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so it is necessary for you to testify in Rome.’” (Acts 23:11)
Are you a witness for the Lord and are you in danger now? Then remember that you are immortal until your work is done. If the Lord has more witness for you to bear, you will live to bear it. Who can break the vessel which the Lord intends to use again?
If there is no more work for you to do for your Master, it cannot bother you that he is about to take you home and put you where you will be beyond the reach of adversaries. Your witness-bearing for Jesus is your chief concern and you cannot be stopped in that until it is finished, therefore be at peace. Cruel slander, wicked misrepresentation, desertion of friends, betrayal by the most trusted one, and anything else that may come cannot hinder the Lord’s purpose for you. The Lord stands by you in the night of your sorrow and he says, “You must bear witness for me still.” Be calm, be filled with joy in the Lord.
If you do not need this promise just now, you may very soon. Treasure it up. Remember also to pray for missionaries and all persecuted ones, that the Lord would preserve them even to the completion of their life work.
Something to think about today if you’re feeling discouraged about ministry: Nothing can stop God’s purpose for your life.
