DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Save your people from unbelief, save them from confidence in created things. Bring all of us to be, as to the world, like a weaned child. May we be done with these things; and as to you, Lord, may we seek after yet more of you with strong desire, and cling to you as our sure confidence forevermore.

As for the future, we desire to bless your name that you have covered it from our eyes; nor would we wish to lift even a corner of the veil which hides from us the things that are to be; but we delight to know that he who hast ruled all things for our good does not change. It may be that you have appointed great torrents of tribulation for us, but you will be with us if we pass through the river. Perhaps you will permit us to go through blazing fires of persecution or temptation but we shall not be burned for you have assured us it shall be so, that we shall go through the fires unhurt, since you will be with us.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œYou rejoice in this, even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials so that the proven character of your faith—more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.ā€ (1 Peter 1:6–7)

The apostle declares that you must be tested like gold must be put into the furnace. You have faith, and faith must be tested; it is according to its nature and divine purpose. The faith of Abraham was sharply tested and so must the faith of all believers be. To prove that your religion may be really solid metal and not an imitation of it or a mere gilded bauble, you must be tried. Your Master was tried; he did not win his crown without fighting; he did not enter into his reward without labor. God has a design in our present affliction—that he may have praise and glory and honor at the appearance of his dear Son; a praise, and glory, and honor in which we shall share.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Parachi of Afghanistan.

The Parachi live in isolated valleys in northeastern Afghanistan. Bringing the gospel to them will be difficult, but Christ is worthy.

Pray that God would sustain the missionaries he will send to the Parachi.

FINAL DAY: Get this new devotional on suffering at a discount*

There are a lot of Christian books about suffering that focus on…

  • understanding what God is doing in your suffering

  • how to escape suffering

  • why suffering exists.

While those things are worth talking about and thinking about sometimes, they aren’t usually comforting to suffering people. When we go through a trial, we are faced with a lot of needs, what we need more than anything is to know the unchanging care of Jesus.

My friends at New Growth Press have just put out a new devotional by Spurgeon on the topic of suffering, Your Only Comfort: Devotions for Hope in Suffering, and I love the way this book starts, with Spurgeon’s reflection on Hebrews 13:8, ā€œJesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.ā€ In suffering, when everything feels flipped upside-down and falling apart, THIS is what we need. We need to know Jesus is the same. His power is the same. His care is the same. And it always will be.

This brand new devotional by Spurgeon (compiled by Geoffrey Chang) is on sale for JUST ONE MORE DAY. Whether you are in the middle of a trial right now or not, this book will strengthen your foundation of faith. I know you will be blessed as you read it. You need this book, so grab your copy today.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON
