DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Oh infinitely glorious Lord, to praise you is our delight. We never feel so blessed as when we are either at the foot of the cross or at the foot of the throne, and we bless you that we know both places. Our eyes are better than our lips in this adoration, for we can weep to the praise of the mercy which we see in the bleeding Son of God; but still at the foot of the Throne we would worship him who lives forever. All glory be to our creator, preserver, redeemer, comforter. It is he who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. We would worship and bow down; we would kneel before the Lord our maker in the reverence of our hearts. All honor and glory and power and dominion be unto him who sits upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever and ever!

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” (1 John 3:16)

The Son of God had no relationship to us until he chose to assume one out of his infinite compassion. There was no more relation between him and us than between the potter and the clay. If the clay on the pottery wheel is misshapen, what does the potter do but discard the clay? So might the great Creator have done with us. Yet with no claims on himself, of his own free will, he yielded to death because of his amazing love for us.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Duano of Indonesia.

The Duano are victims of racial prejudice from surrounding groups. They need to hear that Jesus has died for people from EVERY tribe.

Pray that missionaries would bring the good news of Jesus to the Duano.

Seeing the Beauty of God in the Beauty of His World

This week, as we have focused on God as our creator, I hope you have looked at the world that God has made with an increased appreciation. God really has “made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). A great book for increasing your appreciation of the beauty of creation is Turning of Days by Hannah Anderson.

Hannah is a great thinker and brilliant writer. Her books are always challenging and encouraging, but this one is really unique. This book is based on the idea that the heavens and the world that God created declare his glory, but we have to learn to listen. Hannah takes us on a journey through the four seasons and shows how we can see glimpses of the Creator in the world he has made. Illustrations from her husband Nathan make the book even more beautiful.

I know this book will encourage you. With spring fast approaching, it’s a great time to grab a copy.

“For I will not accuse you forever, and I will not always be angry; for then the spirit would grow weak before me, even the breath, which I have made.” (Isaiah 57:16)

Our heavenly Father seeks our instruction, not our destruction. His accusations against us have a kind intention towards us. He will not always be in battle against us. We think the Lord is long in his chastisements, but that is because we are short in our patience. His compassion endures forever, but not his accusations. The night may drag along with a weary length, but it must eventually end and make way for the cheerful day. As accusation is only for a season, so the anger which leads to it is only for a small moment. The Lord loves his chosen too well to be always angry with them.

If he were to always deal with us with accusation, we would faint outright and go down hopelessly to the gates of death. Take courage, dear heart; the Lord will soon end his chiding. Bear up, for the Lord will bear you up and bear you through. He who made you knows how frail you are and how little you can bear. He will tenderly handle those whom he has fashioned so delicately. Therefore, be not afraid because of the painful present, for it will quickly lead to a happy future. He who punished you will heal you; his little wrath shall be followed by great mercies.

Something to think about today if you’re feeling accused by God: The Lord disciplines the ones he loves.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

“Nothing that God has made is self-existent. Self-existence belongs exclusively to the ‘I AM THAT I AM.’” — Charles Spurgeon
