DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Lord, though you have healed us of a former lameness so that now we have strength, we need a further touch from you; we are so apt to get dull and stupid; come and help us, Lord Jesus. A vision of your face will brighten us; but to feel your Spirit touching us will make us vigorous. We long to see the leaping and walking of the man born lame. May we today dance with holy joy like David before the Ark of God. May a holy exhilaration take possession of every part of us; may we be glad in the Lord; may our mouth be filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing, “for the Lord has done great things for us of which we are glad.”

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength.” (Ephesians 6:10)

Whether you are called upon to work, or to wait, or to watch, or to suffer, you need to be strong. If you are not yourself strong, the very armor that you wear will be a burden to you. It is of the utmost importance that Christians should be as strong in grace as they can possibly be. And the power that is to be in them is to be the power of God: “the power of his might.” What a wonderful power that is! The power of flesh is weakness, and the power of man is fading, but the power of God is almighty and unchangeable; and if we can be strengthened with this power there is scarcely any limit to what we may successfully attempt.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Kluet of Indonesia.

These people have very little access to medical care and are seeing a sharp increase in deadly illnesses like malaria and dengue fever. They need doctors and medical providers.

Pray that Christian doctors will bring medical care and the hope of Christ to the Kluet.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

God is at work — be helped by his strength

This week, we’re reflecting on the theme of God’s power and strength. But how does God’s strength help us today? That’s the ministry of God the Holy Spirit. He is at work in us, through us, and for our good, ultimately for God’s glory.

If you want to learn more about God the Holy Spirit’s ministry, Supernatural Power for Everyday People by Jared Wilson is a great resource. This is a fantastic, thoroughly-biblical book on experiencing the Holy Spirit that will leave you confident in God’s grace (not pursuing experiences that “feel” spiritual).

I know this book will bless you, so I hope you’ll grab a copy today.

FAITH’S CHECKBOOK

Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.

If you want to strengthen your faith in God’s promises (and support this ministry!), subscribe to Pray with Spurgeon Plus here.

“This is the declaration of the LORD, the God of Israel… ‘those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disgraced.” (1 Samuel 2:30)

Do I make the honor of God the great object of my life and the rule of my conduct? If so, he will honor me. I may receive no honor from people, but God himself will honor me in the most effective manner. And be sure that one of the surest ways to honor God is to be willing to endure shame for the sake of your conscience.

Eli, the priest to whom God spoke this promise, had not honored the Lord by ruling his household well; his sons had not honored the Lord by behaviour worthy of their sacred office. Therefore the Lord did not honor them, but took the high priesthood out of their family, and made young Samuel to be ruler in the land instead of anyone from their line. If I would have my family lifted up by the Lord, I must honor him in all things. God may allow the wicked to win worldly honors, but the dignity which he gives — glory, honor, and immortality — he reserves for those who are careful to honor him by holy obedience.

What can I do today to honour the Lord? I will promote his glory by my spoken testimony and my practical obedience. I will also honor him with my whole soul and by offering some special service to him. Let me sit down and think how I can honor him, since he will honor me.

Something to think about today if you’re feeling dishonored by others: God will honor those who honor him.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

“Rest all your weight on God's promises. When heart and flesh fail, God will be your strength.” — Charles Spurgeon
