DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Our Father in heaven, it is an intense joy to us to call you by that endearing name, for it is no mere empty title. We feel the spirit of adoption in us âwhereby we cry, Abba, Fatherâ (Romans 8:15). We feel the nature of God in us, which has been given us by the Spirit of God, the quickening, the renewal, being born again to a living hope.
O Lord, we thank you, that we are your children by regeneration as well as by adoption, that we have been made partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption which is in the world through lust. And we would revel in the thought that now it is given to us to become the sons of God, even to as many as believe on the name of Jesus, which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
âIf you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him.â (Matthew 7:11)
The point is, not only that God gives, but that he knows how to give. If he were always to give according to our prayers, it might be very injurious to us. He might give us that with which we could do hurt, as when a father should put a stone into a boyâs hand; or he might give us that which might do us hurt, as if a father were to give his child a serpent.
God will do neither of these things; but he will answer us in discretion, and with prudence will he fulfill our desires. You know how to give to your children; how much more shall your infinitely-wise Father, who from heaven sees all the surroundings of men, give good things to them that ask him?
GOD THE FATHER FOR PARENTS
This week, the newsletter is focusing on God the Father. Remembering that God is our Father is an incredible help for parents, for two reasons.
1. Weak parents are loved by God. God the Father has adopted you as his children. You are always his children, no matter how inconsistent your love and parenting are. He doesnât love you more on the days that you are a rockstar parent. He doesnât love you less on the days that you skip family devotions.
2. Weak parents can imitate God. We must show our children the unchanging Father-love of God. We bear with the weakness of our children, knowing that God has beared with us. We help our kids, just as God has helped us. We are patient with our kids, just as God has been patient with us.
Parents, lead your kids to be lifelong followers of Jesus. Family devotionals from God Centered Family give you everything you need. Learn more at GodCenteredFamily.org.
