DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

If this life is to be the crucible and the burning heat to your people, even to a white heat, so let it be, so long as you sit at the furnace mouth, to watch the ore that nothing should be lost. Oh, blessed God, help any of your children who are in the midst of the heat now. Let them see the Lord sitting near and watching and let them feel perfectly at ease, because in his hands all things must be well.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œBut if you are without disciplineā€”which all receiveļ»æā€”then you are illegitimate children and not sons.ā€ (Hebrews 12:8)

God will not spare his children when they need to be chastened. They shall have some blows as hard as he can well lay them onā€”that is to say, as hard as such a loving heart as his will permit him to give. They shall have such blows that each one of them shall have to cry out, ā€œI am broken in two; my heart is smitten and withered like grass.ā€ And this is to be the treatment for every son whom God receives; not for some of them, but for all.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, weā€™re praying for the Tama of Chad.

The Tama live along the border of Chad and Sudan. This is a dangerous region full of minefields and armed conflict. It will be risky for missionaries to go to the Tama, but we know that it is worth it.

Pray that God would keep the Tama safe and end all conflicts in Chad and Sudan so that the gospel could spread more freely.

Finding Scripture-saturated hope in the midst of doubt and suffering

This week, as we think about Godā€™s discipline, we are forced to acknowledge that Godā€™s love doesnā€™t always feel like love. In the midst of suffering, it is easy to doubt Godā€™s love for us and feel as if he has deserted us. An excellent book to help you find hope and faith through that kind of suffering is Deserted by God? by Sinclair Ferguson.

Each chapter of the book offers a devotional on the Psalms of lament in the Bible, where divinely-inspired authors cried out to God in the midst of their pain.

No matter what trials you are currently going through (or will go through in the future), Deserted by God? will give you the kind of Bible-saturated firm faith you need to endure. I hope you will grab a copy today.
