DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

We are pardoned; we are clean; we are washed with the blood of Christ—as many as have believed in his name—there is no sin remaining on us. But, as children, we come under another discipline, and members of a family that offend our Father. Our Father, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us.” We do very freely and very heartily and very truly forgive anybody who may have aggrieved us. Do so with your children, and let us feel a certainty now that we are perfectly reconciled with God, and that we are one with you, and speak with you as a man speaks with his friend.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12)

This pardon we can only obtain as we freely pass over the offenses of others against ourselves: “as we forgive our debtors.” This is a reasonable, no, a blessed requirement, which it is a delight to fulfill. It would not be safe for God to forgive a man who will not forgive others.

Lord, I most heartily forgive all who may have done me wrong, I am lenient with those who are indebted to me; and now, with a hopeful heart, I pray that you would forgive me, as surely as I now forgive all who are in any sense my debtors.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Ainu of China.

The region where the Ainu live is extremely Muslim, with very little Christian influence. Missionaries will have to leave their homelands to bring the gospel to the Ainu and their neighboring people groups.

Pray that God would call and prepare missionaries to the Ainu.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

How to live as a peacemaker

Today, we are praying that God would forgive us as we have forgiven others. We are called to live as peacemakers, but in an increasingly divided world, it is hard for prideful sinners like us to resolve and avoid conflict.

That’s why The Peacemaker by Ken Sande is such a valuable resource. This book is a comprehensive guide to understanding and addressing conflict in a biblical way.

The Bible has all the wisdom we need to prevent and resolve conflict — in our marriages, in our homes, in our workplaces, in our churches — and The Peacemaker is a great guide to the Bible’s teaching on this important topic.

I hope you’ll pick up a copy today — it’s a thorough and intensely practical guide that will help you walk in wisdom in all of your relationships.

FAITH’S CHECKBOOK

Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.

“The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and rescues them.” (Psalm 34:7)

We cannot see the angels, but it is enough that they can see us. There is one great angel of the covenant, whom though we have not seen him, we love him, and his eye is always upon us both day and night. He has an army of holy ones under him and he causes these angels to watch over his saints and to guard them from all evil. If devils do us mischief, shining ones do us service.

Note that the Lord of angels does not come and go, only visiting us occasionally, but he and his armies encamp around us. The headquarters of the army of salvation are wherever those whose trust is in the living God are. This camp surrounds the faithful so that they cannot be attacked from any quarter unless the adversary can break through the entrenchments of the Lord of angels. We have a fixed protection, a permanent watch. Guarded by the messengers of God, we shall not be surprised by sudden assaults or swallowed up by overwhelming forces. Deliverance is promised in this verse, deliverance by the great captain of our salvation, and that deliverance we shall receive again and again until our warfare is accomplished and we exchange the field of conflict for the home of rest.

Something to think about today if you’re feeling under pressure: The Lord Jesus himself will never abandon you.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

The Lord is very ready to forgive. Christians are unmerciful sometimes, but not the Master.” — Charles Spurgeon
