DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Revive deep spirituality in the hearts of your own children. We desire to live so near to the great Shepherd that we are familiar with his voice, to know its tones, so that we will not follow a stranger; for we do not know the voice of strangers. If it were possible, they would deceive even the very elect; and how shall your elect be kept from their deceptions but by abiding in the truth and walking in the power of the Holy Spirit? Oh, revive your church, we pray, in this respect! Give to those who know you a more intense faith in the eternal truths, burning into us by experience the things which we do know; may they be beyond all question to us.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“The sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will never follow a stranger; instead they will run away from him, because they don’t know the voice of strangers.” (John 10:4–5)

Heretics attract their companies, but the faithful followers of Christ never go after them. They cleave to the truth, which is the voice of Christ, and they will not be persuaded by the most marvellous lying wonders, nor by the greatest arrogance, to depart from him who is their all.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Zaghawa of Chad.

The Zaghawa came from Sudan originally, where violence forced many of them to become refugees in Chad.

Pray that the Zaghawa would know the peace of Christ in the midst of intense upheaval.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

God is real (and that is really, really good news)

Today's prayer reminded us we need to work hard to hold onto the truth and resist the lies of the enemy. Sin and unbelief rob us of joy by bringing us to doubt that God really is there (or really is good). But when we embrace him in faith, we see that he really is perfect, loving, kind, and real.

A great resource for growing your own faith and ending your unbelief is Jesus or Nothing by Dan DeWitt. This book doesn’t just help us see that God exists, but it shows that God’s existence is really, really good news.

I know that this book will strengthen your faith and equip you to share your faith with others. Jesus or Nothing is an incredible, faith-strengthening, life-giving, joy-producing, Bible-saturated book. I hope you’ll grab a copy.

FAITH’S CHECKBOOK

Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.

“Nothing set apart for destruction is to remain in your hand, so that the LORD will turn from his burning anger and grant you mercy, show you compassion, and multiply you as he swore to your ancestors.” (Deuteronomy 13:17)

Israel had to conquer idolatrous cities and destroy all the spoils that had been polluted by idolatry like an accursed thing to be burned with fire. Now, sin of all sorts must be treated by Christians in the same manner. We must not allow a single evil habit to remain. We must go to war to put sins of all sorts and sizes to death, whether of the body, the mind, or the spirit. We do not look upon this giving up of evil as earning mercy, but we consider it as a fruit of the grace of God, which we would never miss.

When God causes us to have no mercy on our sins, then he has great mercy on us. When we are angry with evil, God is no longer angry with us. When we multiply our efforts against iniquity, the Lord multiplies our blessings. The way of peace, growth, safety, and joy in Christ Jesus will be found by following out these words: “Nothing set apart for destruction is to remain in your hand.” Lord, purify me this day. Compassion, prosperity, increase, and joy will surely be given to those who put away sin with solemn resolution.

Something to think about today if you’re feeling unsure if you should stop a certain sin: “So what fruit was produced then from the things you are now ashamed of? The outcome of those things is death” (Romans 6:21).LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON
