DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

With most humble reverence and most true love, we worship God in Christ Jesus, joining in the song of all the redeemed crowds above, along with all of the angels and principalities and powers. We cannot cast crowns at his feet, for we have none, but if there is any virtue, if there is any praise, if there is anything of grace and good reputation in us, we ascribe it all to God. We cannot cover our faces with our wings, for we have none, but we cover them with something better than angelic wings, the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ. With these we cover our faces, with these we cover our feet, and with these we fly up to God in the holiest fellowship of God.

Glory, and honor, and power, and dominion be unto him who sits upon the throne and unto the Lamb forever and forever.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“The twenty-four elders fall down before the one seated on the throne and worship the one who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne…” (Revelation 4:10)

Notice their humility, they “fall down before” him. They are kings, but yet they fall down—they wear royal crowns, but yet they prostrate themselves. Before the King of kings, having nothing of their own to glory in, they boast in him alone.

Brothers and sisters, are we as humble as we should be? If we think we are, we at once betray our pride. Let us strive against it, and make it our constant and daily endeavor to fall before the throne, confessing our sin.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Afshari of Iran.

The Afshari are an ethnic group of 416,000 Muslims living in northern Iran. They have never heard the name of Jesus and there are no Christians among them. They will never hear the gospel unless someone brings it to them from the outside.

Pray that God would send missionaries to the Afshari.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

Renew your amazement in God

This week, as we reflect on the scene of heavenly beings casting their crowns at the feet of Jesus, I’m reminded of our need to really see the greatness of God. If our lives are to be changed — and if our worship is to be meaningful — we need to be amazed by God.

A great resource for rekindling your amazement in God is Awe: Why It Matters for Everything We Think, Say, and Do by Paul Tripp. This is a simple book with a powerful message. It will leave you amazed at the greatness of God and equip you with practical tips to keep the flame of love for God burning bright.

This is a powerful book to add to your summer reading list. I hope you’ll get a copy today.
