DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Our Lord and master, redeemer and savior, come and take complete possession of us. We are your right; but you must take by force what you have purchased, or you will never have it. By your strong arms, the arms must be those of love, you will capture our willful, wayward spirit. Come and divide the spoil with the strong in us, we pray. Take every faculty and use it, overpower and sanctify it. Help us to employ every moment of our time for you; may we breathe out every breath to your honor. We feel that there is still unconquered territory in our nature. Subdue, Lord, we beg you, our corruptions; cast them out, and in our spirit rule and conquer. Set up your eternal throne in us.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“Then the LORD God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)
Mark him beneath his Maker’s hand, the framework of a man, the tabernacle for an immortal soul; a man made of clay, fully made. After God had formed him out of the dust, then he breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul. Now it strikes me that during the early part of the history of the people whom God means to save, though they have not received into their hearts any spiritual life, nor experienced any of the work of regeneration, yet their life before conversion is really a working of them in the clay.
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, we’re praying for the Balti of Pakistan.
As I shared yesterday, the Balti live in disputed territory. They live in the crossfire of India and Pakistan’s dispute for the Kashmir region.
Pray that the Balti are kept safe in the midst of this international conflict.
RECOMMENDED RESOURCE
Enjoying God’s Grace EVERY DAY of Life*
God does not merely call you to trust in his grace for your pardon (as if salvation was merely for escape from hell tomorrow) — he invites you to enjoy all of the fullness of himself in his Son. In our distracted world, this can seem difficult. We need reminders of the goodness of Christ to keep us focused. One of the most powerful reminders of Christ’s goodness to me recently has been a new book by Tim Chester called Enjoying Jesus.
This is an astounding book. Each chapter takes a different aspect of Jesus’ character or his work and shows you that it’s true and biblical AND really good news.
In each chapter, Tim looks to a different story from the life of Christ in Luke’s Gospel. He retells these familiar stories in a way that leaves us freshly surprised and delighted at the goodness of Jesus in them.
But Enjoying Jesus also does a great job at making specific application in each chapter. He makes clear that we shouldn’t just know these truths about Jesus, we have to really ENJOY the savior they point to.
Really, this book has been such a blessing to me. It has filled me with a lot of lasting joy (not just cheap feelings) in the midst of a difficult season.
I can’t wait to hear about how God uses it in your life.
