DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Glorify yourself in us, we pray, even in these mortal bodies and in our spirits which are yours. Oh Lord, make us a holy and happy people. Help us to live a separated life and to navigate this life with firm and brave steps. Help us, while we do not wrestle with flesh and blood, to fight with principalities, and powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places; and may it be ours to triumph, by your Spirit, in every place, being led in triumph by you from strength to strength, from time to time, from age to age, until the history of your whole church shall be one long triumph for the conquering Lord.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
The light is ours but the glorification is for our Father in heaven. We shine because we have light and we are seen because we shine. By good works we best shine before men. True shining is silent, but yet it is so useful, that men, who are too often very bad judges, are yet forced to bless God for the good which they receive through the light which he has kindled.
We need not object to be seen although we are not to wish to be seen. Since men will be sure to see our excellencies, if we possess any, we must strive that all the glory is given to our Lord, to whom it is entirely due. Not unto us, not unto us, but to your name, oh Lord, be praise!
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, we’re praying for the Tubu of Chad.
The Tubu have a reputation for theft and violence, even kidnapping others and selling them as slaves. They are sinners who have a desperate need for salvation in Christ.
Pray for missionaries to share the good news of grace with the Tubu.
RECOMMENDED RESOURCE
The (not-so-surprising) cure for anxiety
I hope that our prayers this week have exposed the foolishness of pride. Pride is a particularly difficult sin, and it’s often the source of our worries. We’re depending on ourselves, rather than our God.
The path to a peaceful life, free of anxiety, starts by laying down your pride, by relying on the Savior instead of yourself. If you want peace in your life, start by growing in humility.
That’s the point of Humble Roots by Hannah Anderson. This book discusses Christ’s call to humility and practical steps to walk in it. It will definitely encourage you, shape you into Christlikeness, and fill you up with peace.
