DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Create, we beg you, a soul thirst in those who are self-satisfied. Breed a sharp hunger in the hearts of those who have been content with the good things of time and sense. May they begin to long after something more enduring, more satisfying; and when you have given them this longing, reveal Christ Jesus to them, and let them see how he can fill the soul with peace and joy, and how through him “Immortal joys come streaming down; Joys, like his griefs, immersed unknown.”
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6–7)
That peace, that conscious calm, that divine serenity, which is described as the peace of God is not produced by prayer alone but by prayer with thanksgiving. If we bless our gracious Lord for the very trouble we pray against; if we bless him for the very mercy which we need as though it had already come; if we resolve to praise him whether we receive the boon or not, learning to be content in whatever state we are in, then “the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, we’re praying for the Pacoh of Laos.
The Pacoh are animists, meaning that they believe spiritual forces animate everything in the physical realm. They believe all objects, places, and animals have a spiritual essence. They construct spirit-houses outside of their villages to give demons and spirits a place to stay.
Pray that they would turn from idols to serve the one true living God.
RECOMMENDED RESOURCE
A valuable resource for Christians in their 50’s and 60’s*
If you’re in your mid-life, you are probably more aware than ever before of your own weakness. Christians have an important response to this: When we feel weakness or pain (as a result of aging or anything else), our bodies are already reminding us that we will not live in this world forever. We are being taught to number our days.
But don’t let this drive you to despair — there is another side to this truth. The God who made us WILL live forever. He will never change or face death. In him, we can find real significance for all of our days, for every season of life.
I’ve been really thankful to read a new book, Not Old, Not Young, Not Done by Christopher Ash, that offers a mountain of biblical advice for following Jesus in your 50’s and 60’s.
Ash (who is one of the greatest authors and thinkers in the church today), recently turned 70, and wrote the book that he wished he had at the beginning of his 50’s. This is not a theoretical book about aging.
It is a highly practical book about discipleship — what does it really look like to follow Jesus in your 50’s and 60’s?
This book is brand new and for a limited time, you can get it at a discount.
LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON
“It is safer for a believer to lie down in peace than to sit up and worry.” — Charles Spurgeon
