DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Bless your people who are at rest and deepen that rest. May the rest that you give be further enhanced by the rest which they find when they take your yoke upon them and learn from you. May your Word be very sweet to them. May there come over our spirits a deep calm, as when Christ hushed both winds and waves. May we feel not only resignation to your will, but delight in it, feeling pleased with all the Lord provides.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)

We are to learn of Christ and also to learn Christ. He is both the teacher and the lesson. His gentleness of heart fits him to teach, to be the illustration of his own teaching, and to work his great design in us. If we can become as he is, we shall rest as he does. We shall not only rest from the guilt of sin—this he gives us; but we shall rest in the peace of holiness, which we find through obedience to him. It is the heart which makes or mars the rest of the man.

The only way to make sense of our suffering

Our world is full of suffering. And we believe that Christianity offers the only logical explanation for all of the suffering that we face in this world. With so many competing worldviews, the Bible alone offers a hopeful, gospel-saturated explanation of our world.

A great book on this topic is Jesus or Nothing by Dan DeWitt. The book presents Christianity as the only reliable and hopeful alternative to atheism.
