Thanks for praying with us this week. We’ll be back on Monday.

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Lord God, we are amazed that you ever had any mercy on us at all; for in justice and judgment, if we were seated upon the Throne, we could do nothing other than condemn ourselves, for there is no plea against your justice that can be found within our lives or nature. God, we stand, therefore, now in your immediate presence, and our very heart speaks to you, and we rejoice that you who search the heart, know what our heart would say; and if these lips should fail to speak the heart’s utterances, you will interpret what is written in every soul; and if no lip this morning should express the desire of some of your saints, because their groanings are so deep that they cannot utter them themselves, and, therefore, cannot expect anyone else to do it, still, we know that you will read every heart; for every heart is open before you as a book.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne.” (Psalm 47:8)

Now at this moment, over the most debased idolaters, God holds a secret rule; here is work for faith. We should long for the day when this truth shall be changed in its aspect, and the rule now unrecognized shall be delighted in! The great truth that God reigns in providence is the guarantee that in a gracious gospel sense his promise shall be fulfilled, and his kingdom shall come.

Unmoved, he occupies an undisputed throne, whose decrees, acts, and commands are holiness itself. What other throne is like this? It has never been stained with injustice or defiled with sin. Neither is he who sits upon it dismayed, or in a dilemma. He sits in serenity, for he knows his own power and sees that his purposes will not miscarry. Here is reason enough for holy song.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Harzani of Iran.

We just read in Psalm 47:8 that God reigns on a throne over all nations. The Harzani have never bowed before King Jesus because no followers of Jesus have ever invited them to.

Pray that God would save his people among Harzani soon.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

Are you called to ministry?*

Spurgeon famously said, “Do not enter the ministry if you can help it.” Without a clear sense of a call to serve, no one should enter into ministry.

That quote came in the midst of a brilliant address that Spurgeon gave to aspiring pastors on the call to ministry. That address, as well as other great resources by Spurgeon for future pastors, have been compiled into a new book — available for FREE, this month only.

Fit to Lead: On the Call to Pastoral Ministry by Charles Spurgeon compiles three powerful passages from Spurgeon on the call to ministry, understanding and stewarding your gifts, and serving God wherever he puts you.

There’s also a bonus article included on Spurgeon’s thoughts on bi-vocational ministry, written by Dr. Geoffery Chang (one of the world’s foremost Spurgeon scholars today) — Spurgeon’s wisdom on when to pursue bi-vocational or full-time ministry.

This new book is a really great resource. If you take the time to really engage with it, it will give you a lot to think about — whether you’re currently in ministry leadership, hoping to be in the future, or not sure
